SO WHAT celebrates M30 General Assembly Meeting

The SO WHAT Project partners hosted an online General Assembly meeting on 6 and 7 October, to evaluate the work performed in the first 30 months of the project and coordinate the upcoming activities.

Until now the theoretical foundations of the project have been laid, including data handling, technologies and mapping; the specifications of the tool and the common IT framework were defined, and the economic focus of the project (contracts, barriers, CBA, financing model) was analysed.

At the moment, the tool development is undergoing, all the technologies are being implemented in the tool in different ways, and the integration of different modules is being performed.

Validation is also starting in this phase. The analysis of demo and case studies for the future testing and the replication are soon to be performed.

Last, but not least, the training modules are under development, aiming to ease the further replication and exploitation of the SO WHAT Tool.

In addition to analysing the activities carried out and planning the work ahead, the project partners also engaged in an Exploitation Workshop led by Sustainable Innovations to assess the project’s Key Exploitable Results and how to make the most out of them.

Visit to LIPOR demo site in Portugal

On 1 June, Francesco Peccianti and Giorgio Bonvicini, from RINA Consulting, the entity coordinating the SO WHAT Project, visited LIPOR’s facilities in the Greater Porto Area in Portugal. There, they discussed with our partners from LIPOR about Waste Heat recovery opportunities and assessed monitoring infrastructures.

LIPOR, the Intermunicipal Waste Management Service of Greater Porto, was founded in 1982 as Municipality Association and it manages, recovers, and treats the municipal waste produced in eight municipalities of the Greater Porto Area: Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Valongo, and Vila do Conde.

LIPOR is participating in the SO WHAT project mainly with respect to its Energy Recovery plant located in Maia, Portugal, treating 380,000 tons of waste per year. The plant is composed by high temperature gases that go through an energy recovery boiler, which uses the heat to produce steam for power production. In this framework, a study was developed in 2017 to assess the technical-economic feasibility of recovery waste heat of LIPOR’s Energy Recovery plant and the implementation of a district heating system connecting LIPOR and the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, in Oporto. Multiple different options were considered, such as additional burning of waste in the boiler, additional drawing of turbine steam in medium pressure extraction, heat recovery of the exhaust gas from the boiler. With its involvement in SO WHAT, LIPOR will go further in waste heat and cold WH/C valorisation investments related to Oporto Airport.

SOWHAT Review meeting 4-2

SO WHAT celebrates month 24 General Assembly meeting

The SO WHAT Project celebrated its fifth General Assembly meeting online on 30 April, 2021, when all the partners gathered to assess the work carried out during the first 24 months of the project, and to plan on the next steps.

The new SO WHAT Project Officer Olav Luyckx, Project Manager at the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), also joined the meeting to introduce himself, greet all the partners and do a brief follow up on the work progress and upcoming activities.

The main activities performed during this period laid down the theoretical framework of the project regarding data handling, technologies and mapping, and defined the architecture and functionalities of the tool. This set the basis for the tool development, which is currently undergoing, and for the composition of the different modules, which are being integrated.

The upcoming tasks were also presented, and their implementation discussed. They mainly revolve around finalising the development of the tool, its testing and validation, which will be boosted through the promotion and enlargement of the stakeholders community involved in the project. Moreover, an assessment will be carried out to understand the impact of the SO WHAT tool and a set of lessons learnt from different perspectives in its development will be collected. This, together with a refinement of the exploitation strategy, will enhance the replicability of the project outcomes and the continued utilisation of the tool once the project is completed.

Successful Intermediate Review for So What

The SO WHAT project is on the right track! That was the overall conclusion from the review meeting that we held on February 23 with our Project Officer and the European Commission representatives.

Over 18 months, the consortium members have worked hard to research and leverage previous existing knowledge and an already existing tool, to set up the basis for the development of the SO WHAT integrated tool.

The software has now entered the development phase, and later it will be tested across the different demo sites that are active part of the project.

The tool is expected to support industries and energy utilities in simulating and comparing alternative Waste Heat and Waste Cold (WH/C) technologies, and simulate how to balance the local forecasted Heat and Cold demand and supply, including renewable energy sources integration.
